Announcing a Real Life Driving Data Visualization Technology Utilizing the "CAN-Gateway ECU"
On September 4th, 2012, Polyphony Digital along with Toyota Motor Corporation and Denso announced a unique CG visualization technology that utilizes real life car driving data. After roughly 5 years of development, the project has now become available on a commercial equipped vehicle.
The technology utilizes the "CAN-Gateway ECU*", a real time driving data transmission system developed by Toyota and Denso. Information such as position information, vehicle speed, engine RPM, accelerator pedal stroke, steering angle, brake signals, etc. are logged in the "CAN-Gateway ECU" while driving. This driving data can then be saved onto a USB memory stick, and by connecting this to a Playstation®3, the real driving conditions can be recreated virtually within Gran Turismo. It is even possible to compete on the track against your real driving record recreated in game.
Traditional method of recording a spectator's view of your real car on a race circuit would normally require several video cameras, but with this new technology, anyone can easily record their track driving performance - making this a great tool for anyone wanting to monitor and improve their driving skills.
In the announcement presentation at the Fuji Speedway of Shizuoka, Japan, a real-world Toyota FR-S was driven on the circuit by members of the press, and the data gained from the car was recreated within Gran Turismo. This technology which utilizes the "CAN-Gateway ECU" as a platform will be provided as a demo to those within the racing industry starting spring of 2013, with plans of having it available for sale later in the year
